A few days ago, I observed Gigi hiding behind a stack of objects on the kitchen floor while Édith passed by on her way to her food dish. In this brief period of time, at one point, they stared at each other for about 30 seconds, which is a long time in cat time. Édith proceeded to her dish while Gigi kept an eye on her. As Édith turned to leave her dish, Gigi “ducked" out of sight as though she did not want Édith to see her—she was trying to be “invisible” to Édith. Gigi then popped her head back out after Édith had cleared the way.
Can you spot Gigi hiding—going “incognito,” trying not to be noticed by Édith?
Interestingly, when I posted a snippet of a drawing I made of the two cats a few days ago on Instagram, someone from France responded: "J'avoue que j'envie un peu les personnes en confinement avec leur chats." ("I admit that I envy people in confinement with their cats.") Animals, are indeed, very peaceful and entertaining creatures to have around, especially now. When I observe Édith and Gigi, I see them as so content, a juxtaposition to the uncertainty and upside down aspect of the world we humans are currently experiencing, trying to make the best of things in the pandemic.
Speaking of upside down, this reminds me of a quote I saw by the poet Rumi:
“Try not to resist the changes that come your way. Instead let life live through you. And do not worry that your life is turning upside down. How do you know that the side you are used to is better than the one to come?”
Here’s to better days ahead.
We are in this together.
